TST for Medical and Psychiatric Inpatient Settings is an adaptation of TST that seeks to address symptoms of traumatic stress in children. Children who have endured life-threatening illness or injury often experience post-traumatic reactions when in recovery, as the medical setting is an environment that can be filled with an array of traumatic reminders.

The goal of this adaptation is to address issues related to emotional regulation and more specifically, to equip medical staff with the awareness to create a safe setting for these children depending on their specific trauma symptoms. In addition to providing psychopharmacology, skill-based psychotherapy, and advocacy as needed, TST-M also focuses on the importance of providing home-based care for traumatized children and their families to help make a smooth transition from medical setting to home environment and to eliminate traumatic reminders in the home.

Hospital programs implementing TST include KVC Prairie Ridge in Kansas City, Kansas, and KVC Wheatland in Hays, Kansas.
